Purpose of participation
To make anthropology a better home for those who continue to be marginalised by it.
My vision for Popular Anthropology Magazine
I would like to see the publication gain some real traction in the anthropology community, both inside and outside of academia. There are so many burnt bridges that need rebuilt, so many lingering wounds that need treatment. The ONLY way to do this is to listen to those who have been wronged and to amplify their voices.
Why is Anthropology important to you?
Originally, I pursued (palaeo)anthropology because I wanted to learn everything I could about where we came from as a species. As I progressed, though, I realized that the discipline, along with my sociological training, provides me with the opportunity to better understand us in the here and now. Despite anthropology’s blatant role in the origin of scientific racism, as well as continued harm caused by too many anthropologists today, I still believe that it can be redeemed. That it can make a difference for the better.
